I HATE running

I quit playing soccer when I was seven because I hated to run. I was actually good too.

I have since tried to pick it back up, but really, I HATE running.

Runners are fit, fast, admired. I am slow, breathless, tired.

I've tried the treadmill, the road, the beach, pavement. When I lost weight in high school, it was from running, albeit, slow running. When I went away to college, I joined the soccer team because they didn't have enough players. I was slow. It irritated them.

I was supposed to run a 5K this fall, but our family spent the summer passing around illness. It's also hard to run with a stroller. I did learn a thing or two about using my arms to power my jog. But I still HATE running.

I've decided that running should be reserved for really dire circumstances, like being chased by a bear. Seeing as that isn't likely anytime soon, I think I'll stick to walking. I really like walking.

    HA!

I completely, totally detested running until I joined a fitness group for moms called Moms in Motion. They're all over the country, and ours was led by a friend of mine so I joined. The mission is to get women training for a particular event with a philanthropic purpose; we were training for the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure 5k. It wasn't a weight loss program but rather a "Hey, let's train to run together for a good cause" program, and after three months of training I found I no longer hated running. And at one point I *almost* got to the point where I enjoyed it.

I started running again this past spring but it only lasted for a couple months before I fell off the wagon and gained 12 pounds. But I'm bound and determined to start up again when it's not so hot out. For now I'm walking Bear to school five days a week, a little under 2 mile walk with hills. That's helping.

  2. I love walking. We do a 2.5 mile walk and love it. But running- ugh! The running group we joined was kind of like that. If there was a moms group I might be more into it, although I really struggle to run between fitness stations at Stroller Strides, and all the other moms are doing it!
